A community is mourning the death of a County Durham teenager who died after the motorbike he was riding collided with a taxi.

Floral tributes have been left at the spot where the 16-year-old boy, named locally as Tony Hedley, who was known as TJ, died following a crash on Saturday evening at around 8pm.

A second boy, also 16, remains at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with serious injuries.

Flowers, balloons and cans of Budweiser have been left as a shrine for a boy who lost his life on Park Road in South Moor, Stanley.

The tributes have been left outside the house of 20-year-old Bailey Yates who said: “I was not here at the time but I heard about what happened.

“They were on a motorbike and they got hit. It is a bit crazy for that to happen so close.

“I did not know him but it is really sad.”

Ann Gill, 59, who knows the young man’s family said his death would have a big impact on the community.

Ann, a machinist, who lives in Greencroft, said: “My heart goes out to them.

“I am gutted for his parents.

“This will have a big impact on the community. It is a small mining village. It is heart-wrenching.”
