A teenager has died and second remains in hospital after the motorbike they were riding collided with a taxi.
Emergency services were called to Park Road in South Moor, Stanley, just after 8pm on Saturday.
The road was closed for several hours and reopened in the early hours of this morning.
An investigation is ongoing and officers want to thank members of the public who assisted at the scene, particularly those who gave initial first aid.
A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "Police are appealing for information following a fatal road traffic collision in Stanley yesterday (October 5).
"Officers were called to the incident involving a taxi and a motorbike in Park Road, just after 8pm.
"The motorbike rider and passenger suffered serious injuries and were both taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment.

"Sadly the driver of the motorbike, a 16-year-old boy, was declared deceased on arrival. His family have been informed.
"The passenger, a 16-year-old boy, remains in hospital. The taxi driver is not believed to have been injured."
