A Northumberland pub which sources all its ingredients locally including fish from the coast has been named one of the UK’s top places for an autumn foodie break.
The Kirkstyle Inn and Sportsman’s Rest located in Slaggyford has been praised by The Guardian for its seasonal menu and rooms that create a “restful palette”.
The publisher commented on its autumnal guide: “Fancy a seasonal getaway? From cosy inns to restaurants with rooms, we’ve found the best boltholes – all with menus as enticing as the scenery.”

What did The Guardian say about The Kirkstyle Inn and Sportsman’s Rest?
The pub which was refurbished in 2023 sources all ingredients within a “50-mile radius”, “specialising in wild game and moorland-reared meat, and fish from the Northumberland coast, an approach that has helped earn it a place in the Michelin Guide this year.”
The Guardian suggested some seasonal highlights on the menu, such as “roasted venison haunch, with butternut squash and pickled walnut, or gnocchi with artichoke and wild mushroom.”
It adds: “There is also a tasting menu (£75), with a wine flight and regular foodie events, such as a game tasting evening (21 Nov).
“The four guestrooms feature Hypnos mattresses and a restful palette that reflects the greens, purples and moody blues of the moorland and the River South Tyne, which flows through the village.
“Ebikes can be hired to explore nearby Hadrian’s Wall and the Pennine Way hiking trail passes nearby.”
One visitor recently shared on Tripadvisor that they “highly recommend” The Kirkstyle Inn “if you’re a foodie”.
They added: “Stayed here for dinner, bed and breakfast. Tasting menu was fantastic and super value. Great location for walking and off road cycling.”

Another shared: “We passed this place a few weeks ago and thought it looked beautifully refurbished from the outside and well worth a try.
“Today, we went for lunch, and the first impressions were correct. The interior is beautifully executed, a lovely bar, great beer, and wines on offer. The food was lovingly prepared, and the service and timing were superb.
“These people know what they're doing. The prices were very reasonable for food that matched many Michelin-starred establishments at which we've eaten. Deserts were a real treat. We wish them every success. They deserve it.”
