Emergency services are responding to a "large incident" at Moss Side in Wrekenton.
A spokesperson for the force said that there are 24 firefighters in attendance with 5 pumping appliances and a supporting command vehicle.
The fire is located in Moss Side allotments.
Residents in the area are being advised to stay inside and keep all windows shut.
There are high levels of smoke in the area that should be kept out of houses.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson previously said: "TWFRS are currently dealing with a large incident on Moss Side in Wrekenton.
"All residents in the local area are advised to keep all windows and doors closed at this current time due to high levels of smoke."
