PLANS have been submitted to Durham County Council for the reinstatement of a boundary wall with Durham University to the south side of A690 Leazes Road, near Gilesgate roundabout, in Durham City Centre.

The proposed works relate solely to the erection of a section of boundary wall reflecting the materials, form, and height of that previously removed and still present on either side of the gap created as a result of earlier highway-related works.

The works are to be undertaken in reclaimed stone matching the laying pattern of the historic sections with copings to match, all undertaken in an appropriate heritage mortar.

Selection of the wall materials has been undertaken with input from the Durham County Council Design and Conservation Team to ensure the best match possible is sourced.

The intention is to return the wall to a similar form highlighted in the historic image below, reinstating the historic boundary to the buildings lying on the lower land below.

The gap to be infilled forms part of a historic means of enclosure associated with the historic University buildings within the college grounds to the south.
