One person has been taken to hospital after a crash on the A1 that sparked "severe" delays. 

Emergency services were called to the A1 (M) northbound at junction 59, near Newton Aycliffe, on Wednesday (October 2) after a two-vehicle crash. 

The major road was blocked following the incident at around 8.45am, with AA Traffic News reporting lengthy delays and an average speed of 10mph. 

Paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service attended, and has confirmed it took one person to the Darlington Memorial Hospital for further treatment. 

Durham Constabulary added that the person is believed to have only suffered minor injuries. 

The road has since reopened.

Durham Constabulary said: "We were called to reports of a two-vehicle collision on the A1(M) northbound at junction 59, near Newton Aycliffe, at about 8.45am today.

"One person was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries. The road was blocked for a short time but has since reopened."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 8.42am this morning to reports of a road traffic incident on the A1 northbound near Darlington and Newton Aycliffe.

"We dispatched an ambulance crew, a clinical team leader, and a crew from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to the scene. One patient was transported to Darlington Memorial Hospital for further treatment."
