A large cannabis farm was discovered in Darlington by police in a drugs raid.

Officers began investigating during routine arrest enquiries at a property on Charles Street on Friday (September 27).

They noticed a funny smell in the air and decided to investigate further.

Police smashed into the property and found nearly 1,000 plants at different stages of growth.

Darlington Police have highlighted the reasons why cannabis farms are bad for the community:

  • Cannabis grows are usually linked to organised crime.
  • They are directly linked to the exploitation of vulnerable people.
  • They are a huge fire risk, as electricity meters are usually always bypassed, putting innocent lives at risk.
  • They are illegal

A spokesperson said: "Whilst East and North Road Neighbourhood Officers were conducting routine arrest enquiries at a property in Charles Street on Friday, something didn't quite smell right.
