Emergency roadworks have caused huge delays on the A1(M) northbound this morning.
Critical repair work at Bowburn has delayed morning commuters by nearly half an hour, with delays increasing as more cars join the queues.
An AA spokesperson said: "One lane closed and slow traffic due to emergency bridge repairs on A1(M) Northbound between J60 A689 (Bradbury) and J61 A688 Tursdale Road (Bowburn)."
Further south near Bradbury, the delays are now 25 minutes long.
An AA spokesperson said: "Severe delays of 25 minutes on A1(M) Northbound between J59 A167 (Aycliffe) and J61 A688 Tursdale Road (Bowburn).
"Average speed ten mph."

As motorists try to avoid the chaos on the A1(M) they are creating build ups on other roads like the A688.
An AA spokesperson said: "Delays of five minutes and delays increasing on A688 Tursdale Road Eastbound between A167 (Thinford roundabout) and Rosalind Franklin Way.
"Average speed 15 mph."
