Reports of anti social behaviour have increased along one County Durham high street as police say they have received reports of criminal damage and theft.

Police say that a number of secondary school children have been "congregating" along Front Street in Chester-le-Street taking part in anti-social behaviour.

Parents have now been urged to keep an eye on their children and know their whereabouts as patrols in the area increase.

Chester-le-Street Neighbourhood Inspector Simon Hogg said: “In the last week, we have seen a significant rise in the amount of anti-social behaviour taking place on Front Street.

“We appreciate that not all the children who are there are involved in this anti-social behaviour, but they are in danger of getting mixed up in something which could leave them in trouble with the police.

“We continue to respond to incidents, but I would like to urge parents to make sure they know where their children are.

“Not only is this behaviour unacceptable, but we will take action against anyone found breaking the law.

“It is with this in mind I ask parents to talk to their children, find out what they are and explain to them what the consequences of their actions could mean.”
