Police have named a boy who tragically died after he was shot in the head on a farm in Cumbria over the weekend.

The boy, aged 8, has been named as Jay Cartmel of Frizington following the incident in the area of Warcop on Saturday (September 28).

Cumbria Police and the North West Ambulance Service - including an air ambulance - rushed to the scene, where the firearm was secured by officers.

However, despite being airlifted to hospital with  "serious and life-threatening injuries" to his head and face, he tragically died from his injuries.

As previously reported, officers arrested a man in his 60s at the scene on suspicion of assault GBH.

He remained in police custody this morning (Sunday, September 29) and was under arrest on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Emergency services were called to the Warcop area, located just off the A66, after reports that a child had been seriously injured by a firearm on Saturday (September 28).

A full statement from Cumbria Police reads: "An eight-year-old who died following an incident near Warcop on Saturday (28 Sept) has been identified as West Cumbrian boy Jay Cartmel of Frizington.

"Jay died after sustaining serious head injuries in an incident on land not far from the A66, north of Warcop.

"As officers continue with their enquiries into this incident, they are encouraging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or the moments leading up to it to come forward.
