Lady Elsie Robson has accepted money raised from a charity day at a County Durham golf course.

The captain's day at South Moor Golf Club raised £1,360 raised for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

South Moor’s 2024 captain, Tom Wilkinson, chose cancer charity as the former England and Newcastle United boss was much-loved in the local area.

It was a fitting choice, as Sir Bobby and his family played at the moorland course in Stanley, not far from where he grew up, and where he lived in later life.

It was one of the highlights of Tom’s year to meet Lady Elsie at the club, to share a celebratory glass with her and to hand over the proceeds of his Captain’s Day.

He said: “Members were so supportive of the cause and were very generous, donating prizes and buying raffle tickets.

“A raffle for a round at the prestigious Close House Colt course was a great success.

“There was fantastic ‘buy-in’ as people were well aware of the vital work that Sir Bobby’s foundation does in funding research and care right here in the North East.

“South Moor is a mixed club of Newcastle and Sunderland fans, and although Sir Bobby is remembered as a black and white, such is the respect for the man and the cause, that everyone got fully behind it.

“I have to thank all the members for their generosity.”

Sir Bobby Robson launched his Foundation in 2008 and it has gone on to raise more than £20 million to find more effective ways to detect and treat cancer.

It funds cutting-edge cancer treatment and innovative patient support services that directly benefit patients, both children and adults, in the North East and Cumbria and play a significant role in international efforts against the disease.

Managed within Newcastle Hospitals Charity, the Foundation works within the NHS and in partnership with other leading charities and organisations. Sir Bobby described it as his “last and greatest team.”
