The much-loved Cheese and Wine Shop in Darlington has been snapped up by new owners, it has been confirmed, just two days after it closed.

The shop, based on Clark’s Yard, has been open since 1999 but closed after five years under its current owners on Saturday (September 28).

Earlier this month now-former owners Claire and Katy said that due to personal circumstances and the tough business climate they had decided to close.

In a Facebook post on Sunday the pair confirmed new owners would take over the shop and reopen in November after a refurb.

In a statement they said: “We cannot thank you all enough for your love, support, and friendship in the shop for the last five years, as we wound down our beloved business…

“So beloved in fact, that it’s been snapped up and has new owners.

“Please join us in welcoming Caroline and Dean to The Cheese and Wine Shop.

“They’re closing throughout October to do some refurbishment, and will be back open 8th November 2024.

“Caroline and Dean live a stone’s throw away from the shop, so they’re lovely local people just like us, who couldn’t stand to see the doors closed forever. We’re thrilled to say that today we finally dotted the Is and crossed the Ts with them.”

Previously Claire and Katy expressed their belief the shop could “flourish” with new owners if they chose to open longer, sell online, and expand.

In April now-PM Sir Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves bought some cheese from the shop on a campaign visit to Darlington.

Sir Keir bought a nutty, sweet and robust mature Swiss cheese, labelled with a striking resemblance to his name – Starnachas – while chose a Berwick Edge from local provider Doddington Dairy which has notes of pineapple and spice.
