First pictures from the scene where an eight-year-old boy was shot in the head on a farm in Cumbria have emerged.

Emergency services were called to the Warcop area, located just off the A66, after reports that a child had been seriously injured by a firearm on Saturday (September 28).

Cumbria Police and the North West Ambulance Service - including an air ambulance - rushed to the scene, where the firearm was secured by officers.

An eight-year-old boy was airlifted to hospital having suffered "serious and life-threatening injuries" to his head and face, and tragically died overnight.

Now, pictures and footage from the scene of the horror incident have emerged, showing several police vans and a crime scene investigation vehicle parked beside a road.

A separate image shows a police car parked on a field, with several officers stood beside the vehicle.

Frank Chalmers, a resident of nearby Brough, told PA that he was driving by the scene when he saw medics, police vans and a helicopter.

The 73-year-old said: “I passed the farm at about 3pm and I saw the helicopter with its rotors stopped and medics marching up the hill, a lot of police, maybe five police vans.

"One car was parked in the middle of an empty field. It all looked very serious.

"I think with that level of police presence it’s usually a dreadful incident like a death. They don’t usually turn out in that kind of force.”

The retiree said the area is “very, very rural”.

As previously reported, officers arrested a man in his 60s at the scene on suspicion of assault GBH.

He remained in police custody this morning (Sunday, September 29) but is now under arrest on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

"Emergency services were called at around 2.50pm yesterday (28 Sept) to a farm in the Warcop area following a report that a child had been seriously injured by a firearm at the property.
