An investigation by trading standards has been launched after a County Durham dad found a "steel spike" in his daughter's takeaway curry.

Anton Johnson, from Horden, claims his teenage daughter found and nearly ate what he has described as a hard metal spike in her food from Harbour Tandoori in Seaham.

The 34-year-old chef and creator ordered the meal on Tuesday (September 24) for himself and his daughter, 16, who was eating a mouthful of food when she felt "something sharp".

A picture of the alleged "spike" shows the triangle-shaped metal piece on a piece of paper from the takeaway.

He added: "My daughter was eating her meal and halfway through she pulled out this metal spike. I immediately thought it was just a piece off the tin foil tray.

"But, I squeezed it and got quite a fright when it nearly cut my finger. It is really quite sharp.

"It would not bend - I feel shocked and horrified about it all."

When approached for comment, Harbour Tandoori claimed the 'metal' was from the wrapping.

A statement reads: "As you can see the customer must have opened the foil container and a piece came off from the corner which is totally out of our control.

"We assure you that we take great care when serving our customers and have done so since 2007.

"As a goodwill gesture, we offered the customer various options and apologised even though it is not our fault."

A spokesperson for Durham County Council's Trading Standards has confirmed that a complaint has been logged and an investigation will be undertaken.
