A woman has been pronounced dead following an incident at a Darlington flat.

Police and paramedics were called to an address on Abbey Road, in the town's West End, at around 9.45am on Friday, September 27.

Images from the scene showed several police vehicles and two ambulances parked near the property, with officers seen carrying brown evidence bags into the building before a crime scene investigation arrived.

Durham Constabulary has now confirmed that a woman was pronounced dead in the property, and enquiries are now ongoing to establish the circumstances.

A force spokesperson added that the death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will now be prepared for the Coroner.

Residents told The Northern Echo how they were first alerted to the incident when hearing sirens in the street.

One man, who was walking his dog but lives nearby, added: “I saw something was happening out of my window but we can’t see anything.

“Police were there about an hour ago but it might’ve been a bit longer. I don’t know what’s happened, this is the first time I’ve been out today.”

One 77-year-old, who has lived on the street for a couple of years, added: “There’s been a bit of a fuss. I first saw it all this morning at about 7am, there was one police van, an ambulance, and a paramedic car. I have no idea what has gone on.”

She said it was a bit of a shock: “yes, to wake up to all the goings on. It’s a quiet street, usually just get the footfall if you know what I mean with the kids going to college.”
