A man from County Durham is in an induced coma after becoming injured during an epileptic fit on holiday.

The Northern Echo understands Aiden Thornton was due to fly home from the Canary Islands with his partner when he had a seizure earlier this week.

He is now in an intensive care ward in hospital in Fuerteventura with his family rallying by his side.

An online fundraiser has been set up by relatives to support his partner Kellie Knight who is there with an eight-month-old baby and her eldest daughter.

It is understood Ms Knight’s other two children flew back to UK with their grandfather earlier in the week.

The fundraiser was set by her cousin Melissa Fisher and has so far raised more than £400.

She said: “During the fit, he’s hurt his face mouth and legs.

“Kellie is stuck out there with her baby while Aiden recovers in hospital.

“Every little helps, no matter what, please donate what you can afford.

“It will all help in the long run.”

Ms Fisher has also posted an update on Mr Thornton’s condition for people who are worried about him.

She said: “Aiden still remains in a coma today to help his body heal.

“He’s had scans done which shows no damage to the brain, which is a positive sign.

“During the scan they found that Aiden has broken his wrist during the fit.”

It is understood an issue with the travel insurance and medical bill has now been resolved, but support is needed for the family while they make arrangements to return to the North East.
