A football match between Middlesbrough Women and York City Ladies was abandoned following a "medical incident" on the pitch. 

The incident took place when the Teesside team brought the FA Women’s National League Division One North to Redcar Athletic's home at Green Lane on Wednesday (September 25).

In the 75th minute, teams were forced to return to the changing rooms following what has been described as a "medical incident" involving a York player. 

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed one person has taken to the James Cook University Hospital - although their condition is not yet known. 

A statement said, "We received a call at 9.33pm yesterday (Wednesday, September 25) to reports of a person unwell at Teesside Athletic Football Club, Green Lane in Redcar. 

"We sent one emergency ambulance crew and took one patient to the James Cook University Hospital."

Middlesbrough Football Club said: "Tonight’s match between Boro Women and York City Ladies has been abandoned after a medical incident on the pitch.

"Our thoughts are with the York player and we wish them a full recovery."

Redcar Athletic added: "Redcar Athletic would like to offer our best wishes to the York City Ladies Football Club player involved in a medical incident at Green Lane this evening."

York City Ladies said: "This evening’s game at Green Lane has been postponed due to a medical incident on the pitch. We’ll update supporters as soon as we get a further update."
