Fire crews were called to a Stockton recycling centre to battle a blaze in a skip earlier this afternoon.

Flames took hold in rubbish at the Haverton Hill tip in Stockton shortly before 3pm on Wednesday (September 25).

Firefighters attended and put out the fire within an hour.

Stockton Council confirmed the tip will be closed for the rest of the day. The extent of the damage is not yet known.

A Cleveland Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “We were called on at 2.57pm to an incident at Haverton Hill Road, Stockton.

“Two fire engines were in attendance from Stockton. It was a skip fire. Crews extinguished fire and dampened down the area. We got the stop at 4.05pm.”
