A man was taken to hospital with head injuries after a disturbance which saw armed police close off part of a County Durham village yesterday afternoon.

Police have confirmed the man was one of three people arrested after dozens of officers converged on the Grasmere Road area of Ferryhill.

They were responding to reports of a disturbance at about 2.40pm on Tuesday (September 24).

"The A167 has been closed while officers work at the scene. Motorists should avoid the area and find an alternative route."

Residents described hearing lots of shouting and screaming, before they saw armed police surround the area, with a number of men later seen being led away to police vans.

One resident who did not wish to be named said: "I heard a lot of shouting in the street. The next thing there were armed police all over the place.

"The whole area was closed off, including the A167.

"I kept out of it and didn't see what happened. Someone told me a number of people were taken away and put in police vans."
