Herriot Hospice Homecare has put out the last call to all walkers to join its nine-mile charity hike, as it prepares to start welcoming patients to its new facility by the end of the year.
The Thirsk-based Hospice will be staging the Herriot Hike, which starts at Sutton Bank and follows the picturesque Cleveland Way on Saturday, October 5.
The hike is one of the biggest fundraising events being held by the hospice care charity this year which relies on the support of local people to fund their services, including the newly launched Herriot Hospice@ The Lambert.
Peter Wright, The Yorkshire Vet and an ambassador for Herriot Hospice Homecare worked closely with James Herriot as a veterinary apprentice over 45 years ago.
At the community launch of Herriot Hospice@The Lambert which took place on Sunday, September 15, Peter shared his connections to the hospice; sadly his sister-in-law battled cancer and was cared for by Herriot Hospice Homecare.
“My sister-in-law was only 56 and her partner was only 61 when they died, they both died within six months of each other and Herriot Hospice Home care was invaluable with my sister-in-law when she was terminally ill.”
With Peter being local to Thirsk, he also has a personal connection with The Lambert, both his grandfathers died in The Lambert when it was a local cottage hospital.
Along with hundreds of hospice supporters, Peter fundraised to help make Herriot Hospice@The Lambert a reality, stating the cause is “very dear to his heart”.
Peter took on the Roses cycle route from Morecambe to Bridlington as well as organising a tractor run with some of the local farmers.
As well as his fundraising efforts, Peter also urges the community to keep fundraising to ensure the future of HerriotHospice@The Lambert, adding: “This is not the end, this is the beginning of fundraising to keep this fantastic organisation going.”
Herriot Hospice Homecare has cared for people living with terminal illnesses at home across Hambleton and Richmondshire for over three decades, and following its recent launch, will soon expand care based at Herriot Hospice@The Lambert.
The charity is transforming the former Lambert Memorial Hospital, in Thirsk, into the charity’s first hospice building.
The facility will provide inpatient hospice care and expanded support services and bereavement support, as well as become a base for the charity’s existing and growing HOME service.
It will serve families living with terminal illness and bereavement in Thirsk, Northallerton, Richmond and across Hambleton and Richmondshire.
The centre is anticipated to begin serving patients with its initial services by the end of the year, as well as discussion on the growth of hospice services locally through Herriot Hospice@The Lambert, the support of the charity’s community and ongoing funding for hospices.
North Yorkshire MP Rishi Sunak visited a Thirsk hospice, ahead of the facility’s doors opening to patients by the end of the year.

Mr Sunak said: “It was great to see what has been created at The Lambert. It will be a superb facility which I know many of my constituents have done so much to make a reality.
“Herriot Hospice Homecare is a much-loved organisation and this development of its well-used service will be welcomed. I congratulate the charity for what it has achieved in developing its services in this way.”
