Darlington is braced for extreme weather later today as heavy rain returns to the region.

The Met Office predict that there will be heavy rain from 8pm tonight and continuing throughout the day tomorrow.

There is currently a yellow weather warning in place in Darlington for Thursday.

Temperatures will be cool throughout the day today at 11C and wind speeds are expected to remain low.

The sun is expected to set by 18:56pm.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Cloudy throughout the day but initially largely dry.

"From late morning, showers will develop across the region, merging into longer spells of rain later in the afternoon, perhaps becoming persistent and at times heavy into the early evening. Maximum temperature 13 °C.

"Unsettled, cloudy and wet overnight, with rain being persistent and occasionally heavy, particularly over the Cheviot Hills. Winds will start off light but will soon strengthen, especially near the coast."
