Wallsend murder probe: Man charged after death of John Smyth

Emergency services were called to Holly Avenue, in the Wallsend area, on Sunday (September 22) shortly after 5am after reports of a disturbance. 

A man - who was later named by the force as John Smyth, 63, from the Derby area - was found to have sustained serious injuries and died a short time later.

Northumbria Police has now confirmed that George Henry Ness has been charged with murder.

Ness, 41, of Avon Avenue, North Shields, is scheduled to appear before North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court at 10am on Tuesday (September 24).

As previously reported, a murder investigation was launched by the force over the weekend, with two people, aged 41 and 34, being arrested on suspicion of murder.

The 34-year-old has since been released and has been told he will face no further action.

Pictures from the scene of the incident on Sunday showed how a cordon was erected across the terraced street, with police blocking off the road.

The force previously said: "John’s next of kin are being supported by specially-trained officers.

"Our thoughts remain firmly with John’s family and loved ones following their incredibly tragic loss.

"We continue to offer any support they need, and ask that their privacy is respected as they attempt to process the events of the last 36 hours."
