One of the region’s biggest Wetherspoon pubs will reopen on Tuesday after a £2.2m revamp.
The Mile Castle in Newcastle, the city’s main Spoons and one of its biggest watering holes will reopen its doors at 8am after a three-month refurbishment.
The boozer has been given new decoration, lighting, extended bars and a new cellar as part of the works.
It has also been given new unique carpets, following the chain’s pattern of having a different designed carpet in each pub. The kitchens have been upgraded,
An extra 70 full- and part-time jobs have been created on top of 130 existing employees.
A new 26-bedroom Spoons hotel is being built in an adjoining building, which will open in November. In total, it will represent a £5m investment.
Pub manager Kristopher Lee said: “The £5 million investment highlights Wetherspoon’s commitment to the pub, its staff and customers, as well as to Newcastle itself.
“We are delighted that we have also created 70 new jobs for local people.
“The team are looking forward to welcoming customers back into The Mile Castle and we’re confident that they will be impressed by the new-look pub.
“We also look forward to the new hotel opening on 12 November.”
Work on the neighbouring hotel, based in the former home of law firm Samuel Phillips and also the former home of Dr C J Gibb, who was immortalised in The Blaydon Races, is progressing.

On the same date a new beer garden will open on the site of a former car park to the side of the building.
The venue first opened in 2009, and spans three floors capable of hosting hundreds of drinkers.
The Mile Castle pub will be open from 8am until 1am Sunday to Thursday, and 8am until 2am Friday and Saturday. Food will be served throughout the day, from opening until 11pm every day.
