Bishop Auckland’s market square will be transformed into a ‘magical Christmas town’ for the fourth year this winter.

The Christmas Town event, now in its fourth year, will return after drawing 35,000 visitors over two days last year.

Due to demand it has been extended to run over ten days from Friday, November 29 to Sunday, December 8.

Giant tipi bars, an ice rink, Santa’s grotto, and market stalls are all on the cards of the event.

Bosses are expecting 60,000 people for this year’s festivities, and are planning to put on trips with local schools.

Thomas Wales from co-organisers Baccanalia said: “To be expecting upward of 60,000 visitors in our fourth year is a sensational achievement, and one Bishop Auckland should be proud of - it’s been a community effort to make the event what it’s become.

“With the other fantastic winter events in and around the town such as AGLOW, Christmas at the Palace and Santa Express we’re well on our way to claiming the title Christmas Capital of the UK.”

Entry to the event will be free, although some attractions will be ticketed.
