Motorists are being advised the A19 will be closed overnight.

Improvements to the key route through the region are planned as a programme of resurfacing continues.

The work, which includes drainage improvements, will be carried out on the A19 northbound between the A1018 (Ryhope Spur) and the Hangman’s Lane overbridge.

To allow this to be carried out safely, the A19 northbound between Ryhope Spur and the A690 Herrington Interchange will be closed each night, Monday to Friday, for the next two weeks.

This will be followed by a further two weeks where this route will be closed every night except for Saturdays.

All overnight closures are scheduled between 8pm and 6am the following morning

There will be fully signed diversions during the closures. A19 northbound traffic should follow the signed diversion route along the A1018 to the roundabout with the B1285, continue along the B1285, B1404 and A690 to re-join the A19 at the A19/A690 Herrington interchange.

All work is subject to the weather and may be rescheduled in poor conditions. There will be a daytime 50mph speed limit on A19 NB for traffic running on temporary surfaces.

Updates on the A19 and other schemes in Yorkshire and the North East are shared on the National Highways: Yorkshire and North East web page as well as on the regional X feed, @HighwaysNEAST and the National Highways: North East Facebook page.
