A North East toll road has been named as one of the most expensive in the country as analysis shows it made

Only three roads in the UK are more expensive than the Tyne Tunnel, connecting Jarrow and Wallsend, according to research by Moneybarn Car Finance.

The firm analysed total toll revenues and weekday full-price toll costs, revealing the Tyne Tunnel generates an annual revenue of £24,579,000.

In May, the Tyne Tunnel's toll for cars rose to £2.40 and the class three vehicle toll, for HGVs, LGVs, van or buses over 3.5 tonnes, rose to £4.80.

In comparison, the Dartford Crossing in Essex tops the list, raking in £215.9 million per year.

Despite being the only road crossing the Thames from East London, the toll, which was initially meant to be scrapped post-recovery of construction costs, remains at £2 between 6am and 10pm.
