A two-vehicle crash on a major Durham road sparked lengthy tailbacks during rush hour. 

Emergency services were called to the A690 at Carrville, near the road's junction with the A1, on Tuesday at around 7.50am following a collision.

The road was blocked while cars were recovered from the scene - with AA Traffic News reporting long queues of traffic along the busy route throughout the morning. 

The North East Ambulance Service, which sent a rapid response paramedic, confirmed crews assessed and discharged one patient on scene. 

Durham Constabulary said: "We were called to reports of a two-vehicle collision on the A690 at Carrville at about 7.50am this morning (Tuesday, September 17).

"The road was blocked for a short time while the cars were recovered."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on High Street, Carrville, at 7.35am this morning (17 September).

"We dispatched a rapid response paramedic, who assessed and discharged one patient on scene."
