Events and the day-to-day running of a Darlington theatre will remain 'unaffected', according to the venue, after it went up for sale for £250,000.

The Majestic on Bondgate in Darlington appeared up for sale on Carvers Commercial properties earlier this week - raising questions about the future of the events space, which is used as a theatre, bar, and function venue.

The historic venue, which was originally The Majestic Cinema in the 1930s, became the Odeon in the 1950s before it was turned into a snooker hall, which it remained until it was turned into the theatre space and reopened in 2014.

Over the last decade, the Majestic has had several owners - with the building appearing for sale online for £250k on Carver Commercial estate agents earlier this week.

"At present, the ground floor comprises a reception entrance, large soft play area, commercial kitchen and ancillary staff facilities/ offices/ stores.

The second floor comprises an open-plan bar area with a large theatre/ auditorium. There are ancillary stores/ offices on the third and fourth floors."

The listing goes on to say that the "existing occupier would continue the operation of the theatre across the upper floors subject to negotiation," while also adding: "The property may suit a variety of alternative business uses or indeed re-development opportunities, subject to obtaining any necessary planning, statutory or local authority consents."

Representatives of The Majestic have now reassured people who use the venue that the operations of the theatre and bar will be 'unaffected' by this sale.

In a statement, the venue said: "The landlord has decided to sell The Majestic as he prepares for retirement.

"The Majestic bar and theatre will remain unaffected, with all shows and events continuing as scheduled, without any disruption."

Despite the reassurances about the theatre and bar area, Gi Gi's Softplay, which was based at The Majestic, will close on September 30, due to 'rising costs'.

The statement from the Majestic added: "Consequently, coupled with the ongoing challenges posed by rising operational costs, we have made the difficult decision to close the soft play facility at the end of September."
