A man has been left in critical condition and has sustained life-threatening injuries following an assault at a North East pub this weekend.

Emergency services were in attendance at The Lakeside Inn in Jarrow last night (September 14) at around 10:45pm after a man sustained a head injury following an assault.

Reports say a man was punched by another male and was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

An investigation has now been launched by Northumbria Police in to the incident who are appealing to the public for information.

A full police statement reads: "Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward as they investigate a report of an assault in Jarrow which has left a man with a life-threatening injury.

"Police received a report via the ambulance service that at around 10.45pm yesterday (Saturday), a man aged in his 40s required medical treatment for a serious head injury at the Lakeside Inn near Fellgate Estate, Jarrow.

"It was reported that during the assault, the victim was punched by another male. He was taken to hospital for treatment and remains in a critical condition.

"Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances around the incident, and officers are today (Sunday) appealing to anyone who may have information to contact them.
