Two people who were trapped in a vehicle following a crash on a County Durham road this evening have been taken to hospital.

Emergency services including the fire service and police have been in attendance on North Lane (B6299) near Crook this evening (September 14) and closed the road just after 5:30pm following a crash.

One vehicle was involved which crashed in to a wall. The road remains closed.

It has now been confirmed that two people were trapped in the vehicle following the crash but were freed by the fire service who sent two fire engines to the scene.

They have been taken to hospital.

A spokesman for North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 17.33h today (14 SEP) to reports of two patients trapped inside a vehicle following a road traffic collision on B6299 in Crook.

"We dispatched two paramedic ambulance crews and two Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) crews and were assisted by the fire and rescue service, who were needed to free both people from their vehicle.

"Both patients were taken to hospital."

A spokesperson for County Durham and Darlington Fire & Rescue Service said: "At 17:39 on Saturday, September 14, we were alerted to a road traffic collision involving a single, private motor vehicle that collided with a wall on the B6299 crossroads near Stanley Crook.

"In response CDDFRS mobilised one appliance from Crook, one appliance from Consett and a flexi duty officer to the scene.

"Our firefighters worked quickly to extricate two casualties from the vehicle using specialist equipment. The casualties were then handed over to our colleagues from The North East Ambulance Service for assessment and further care.

"CDDFRS crews left the scene at approximately 18:52."
