Banking giants Halifax and Lloyds have announced their latest raft of branch closures with two in the North East and North Yorkshire facing the axe.

Halifax will close its sites in North Shields and Northallerton and January and April 28 respectively. 

The bank brand said three-quarters of customers at the Northallerton site is used other branches and online banking in the last 12 months, and 63% of customers are over 55.

That is compared to 79% of customers at North Shields.

It means the nearest Halifax banks for the North Yorkshire site will be in Darlington and Thornaby, both more than 15 miles away.

More than 30 branches across the North East and North Yorkshire have shut down in the last 18 months leaving many customers without a local store.

Another 14 have been earmarked for closure by various bank brands with the final withdrawals to be made in the coming months.

Banks including Lloyds, HSBC and Halifax are continuing to push forward with the move to online banking. The number of people using in-person services has been falling for years as more people switch to digital.
