A BBC weather presenter has been left 'baffled' by a question from a listener - who claimed to have seen 'purple clouds' over the North East on Thursday (September 12).

For those tuning into BBC Radio Newcastle’s afternoon show at around 4.45pm, you may have heard the question directed to BBC Look North weather presenter Paul Mooney.

Asking the question to the weather presenter, fellow broadcaster and host of the show, Scott Makin, said: "Kath from Gateshead has been in touch and wants to know why the clouds over Gateshead were purple in colour at around 3pm?"

Seconds later, the radio host was in hysterics after the question initially seemed to baffle Paul Mooney, with the forecast only offering a response of 'ehh' initially.

However, after composing himself, and recovering from the initial hesitance, Mr Mooney did have a response for listener Kath.

"Off the top of my head, these big thick clouds sometimes have flat bottoms and sometimes they'll block out the light," he said.

"So I imagine it's a trick of the light as the sun is struggling to get through the clouds".

The weather presenter then jokes: "Or maybe it's those new sunglasses you've got Kath," which prompted laughter in the studio.

Despite giving the response, presenter Scott Makin couldn't help making fun of Paul one last time, as he concluded: "I think I prefer the official statement of 'ehh'."
