The Children's Society has confirmed their charity store in Consett had closed as a result of a changing 'high street landscape'.

The store, which was located on Middle Street in Consett, closed at the end of August.

Now, the charity claims keeping the store open would be 'unsustainable' because of a variety of factors including the financial climate.

Tina Fellstrom, national retail operations manager at The Children’s Society, said:

"Our Consett shop has been a cornerstone in helping us raise essential funds to help children and teenagers for over three decades. We are incredibly grateful to the community for their ongoing generosity and support throughout these years.

"Unfortunately, as the high street landscape has changed, rising costs and the need for significant repairs to the building have made it unsustainable to keep the shop open."

The Middle Street charity shop sold books, bric-a-brac, clothes and accessories, homeware, and music among other items in order to raise funds for the charity.

The Children's Society provides specialist support for vulnerable young people who have experienced poverty, abuse or neglect.

“We are committed to serving the North East, with shops in Newcastle, Durham and Sunderland, and looking ahead, we hope to replace closed shops with more new locations to continue our work in the future," Ms Fellstrom said.

“In the meantime, I’d like to thank all our customers, volunteers and supporters in Consett.  Your contributions have helped us to make such a difference to young lives.”
