Police have launched an investigation after “senseless” break-ins at two County Durham businesses.

Officers were called to Front Street, in Framwellgate Moor, after both Taylor's Butcher’s and The Little London Hair Boutique were broken into overnight.

A cordon was erected around both properties on Tuesday (September 10) morning, with pictures showing how the front door of both properties had been left smashed.

The front door of “sophisticated” unisex salon The Little London was shattered, with a damaged glass pane lying on the path outside the store behind the blue and white police tape.

Meanwhile, the glass window on the front door of the award-winning Taylor's Butcher’s - which has been family-run butchers since 1922 - was also put through.

It is not currently known whether any items were taken from the properties - but Durham Constabulary has asked anyone with information to get in touch.

City of Durham MP Mary Kelly Foy, whose office is located near both businesses, has since branded the incidents as “appalling” and said she looked forward to hearing those responsible had been “identified and brought to justice”.

A full statement from the MP said: “It’s appalling that two much loved local businesses have been targeted in this senseless way.

“I’ve always been a strong supporter of local businesses, and my team have already been in touch with the owners to offer our support.

“I look forward to hearing that those responsible have been identified and brought to justice swiftly.”
