Two people were taken to hospital after a van and car crashed on a busy County Durham road this morning. 

Emergency services were alerted to the collision on the A693 at Pelton, near Chester-le-Street, shortly after noon on Tuesday (September 10).

Paramedics treated two people at the scene before taking them to hospital, while a third person made their own way to hospital for treatment. 

The road was closed for a couple of hours while the scene was cleared. 

A North East Ambulance spokesperson said: "We received a call at 11.59am this morning to reports of a road traffic on the A693 near Chester-le-Street.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews to the scene and transported two patients to the University Hospital of North Durham for further treatment.

"One further patient turned down treatment on-scene and made their own way to hospital."

A Durham Police spokesperson said: "Police were called at 12.05pm today (September 10) to collision involving a car and a van on the A693 at Pelton.

"The road was closed while the vehicles were recovered."
