This County Durham petrol station could be one of the cheapest in the region as it has slashed prices below the national average.

Motorists are saving their well earned money at the Jet petrol station on Redworth Road in Shildon which has lowered fuel prices to just 132.9p per litre.

Those filling up can buy unleaded fuel at just under 133p or diesel for 140.0p per litre.

Across the UK, the current average price for unleaded is 139.41p, and diesel will set drivers back 144.16p per litre.

Other petrol stations have similarly been lowering prices including Hedworth Services in Jarrow, which was pictured to be selling petrol for just 128.5p per litre.

Fellow Jet garage G.W. Holmes in Bishop Auckland also lowered its prices to just 133.7p to welcome in the new month.

This comes after watchdog RAC recently warned retailers had not cut prices despite a drop in the wholesale cost of fuel.

At the end of August the motoring organisation said it was aware of retailers undercutting their supermarket rivals, sparking the big chains to slash their prices.

It said that a newly opened forecourt in Portlethen in Scotland was selling petrol and diesel for 16p less than its nearest Asda, leading the supermarket to cut its prices to match.
