A man who collapsed and died running the Great North Run in memory of his sister has been named.

Sam Wealleans from Newbiggin, Northumberland has been named in the town as the 29-year-old who died during the half-marathon on Sunday (September 8).

The Great Run Company confirmed on Monday that a runner died in hospital after collapsing towards the end of the 13-mile route.

Sam Wealleans was taking part in the race and raising funds for mental health charity Mind in memory of his sister Carly and a family friend, his fundraising page states.

It is understood Carly died in 2022.

A Great North Run spokesperson said: "All at the Great Run Company are deeply saddened by Sam's passing.

"We are continuing to support Sam's close family during this incredibly difficult time, and out thoughts and sympathies are with all those who loved and knew him.

Sarah Hughes, Chief Executive of Mind, added: “We are devastated to learn of the death of Sam Wealleans, who was running and fundraising for Mind at the Great North Run on Sunday.

"We will be forever grateful for Sam’s contribution to helping us be there for people experiencing a mental health problem, we know that this was a cause very dear to him.

“We are in touch with the Great North Run organisers and we are here to support Sam’s family and friends. Our thoughts and condolences are with Sam’s loved ones at this incredibly difficult time, and we ask that their privacy is respected.”

Since the tragic news of his passing his online fundraising page has been flooded with donations in his memory and has since raised £8,000.

One wrote: “So very sorry to hear of Sam's passing. I was a fellow runner in the Great North Run and this has affected us all so much. What a lovely lad doing the run for his sister and mate.”

Another said: “Was a pleasure to know you my friend. You never failed to make everyone smile and laugh.”

Meanwhile many simply added: “Rest in Peace Sam.”

A Great Run Company spokesperson said on Monday: “With great sadness, The Great Run Company confirms the death of a participant in the Great North Run on Sunday, 8 September 2024.

“A 29-year-old male collapsed, received immediate medical treatment, and later passed away in hospital. His next of kin have been informed.

“The whole organisational team at the Great North Run express their sincerest condolences to his family and friends.”
