A “secret” village in the North East has been hailed among the best to live in, according to The Times.

Longhoughton near the Northumberland coast was praised for having “no shortage of beautiful homes” with some even tucked down “pretty lanes”.

The Times commented on its latest property and travel guide: “Where are the places few have heard of but where everybody wants to live?

“With more than 6,000 villages in the UK of every shape, size and situation, there’s a community out there for anybody looking for life on a smaller scale.

“How do you find the one that’s right for you? This list should be a useful starting point, highlighting 20 villages that aren’t well known across the country but are always in demand among those in the know.

“They all have useful amenities, appealing locations and great communities — and often house prices that reflect their popularity.”

What did The Times say about Longhoughton?

“Holiday-home hunters dreaming of a chocolate-box cottage in Craster or Warkworth could be forgiven for overlooking Longhoughton, with its RAF base and no-frills military housing,” writes the publisher.

“But, says Jason Roberts, associate director of Strutt & Parker estate agency, there’s no shortage of beautiful homes here, some on the main drag, others tucked away down pretty lanes, that are a match for anything in Northumberland’s more celebrated seaside honeypots but will cost significantly less.

“The village is certainly on the radar — house prices have grown by almost 50 per cent in the past ten years — and bouji bakery/café chain The Running Fox has opened a branch here.”

The average house price in Longhoughton is said to be around £426,390.

@eatingaroundthetoon 📍@runningfoxcafe Longhoughton Everyone knows the running fox for their amazing afternoon teas, but they also do really good normal food with lots of hot options! Between us, we ordered the bacon and brie quiche which came with wedges and slaw, the mince pie which came with wedges gravy and mushy peas, the pulled pork stuffing and apple melt with wedges and my order was the chicken, chorizo and mozarella doorstop melt. We also enjoyed our food as usual, huge portions, local ingredients, and absolutely delicious! We also took some pie home for tea because it's just unreal from there, I also enjoyed a mars bar crispie slice😋 #newcastleupontyne #northumberlandblogger #runningfox #doorstopbread #chickenandchorizo #mincepie #pieandgravy #longhoughton #northumberland ♬ Im In Love Im Obsessed Rihanna x Casa Di Remix - CasaDi

The Times continued: “There’s no pub, but there is a primary school, village hall and sports facilities as well as a convenience store.

“Northumberland’s glorious beaches are within easy reach, on foot or by car, as is the East Coast Main Line at Alnmouth.

“A cute cottage might fetch £350,000, or if you’ve got £700,000 you might nab a hefty four-bedroom house with a distant view of the sea.”
