A popular Darlington Chinese restaurant is facing a licensing review after “illegal working” was identified at the site.

The Home Office has applied for a review of the premises licence of Bambudda, on Gladstone Street, as it has grounds to believe the licence holder has “failed to meet licensing objectives of prevention of crime and disorder”.

The government department said illegal working had been identified at the“exceptionally busy” venue, which first opened in 2021.

An application has been lodged with Darlington Council saying: “The intention is to prevent illegal working in premises licensed for the sale of alcohol or late-night refreshment.”

A spokesperson for Bambudda said the business is processing a transfer to different management and is unable to provide a comment at this time.

Bambudda is known for serving a mixture of Asian food including noodle and rice dishes, curries, dim sum and a variety of small plates.

In June, the restaurant - which is also well regarded for its all-you-can-eat menu - was put up for sale open for offers around the £100,000 mark.

It was listed as having a "very impressive" weekly turnover starting at £18k-£19k.
