Great North Run runners and spectators have been warned of potential travel disruption due to motorway closures in the North West.

Motorists have been advised to allow time in their journey for diversions as a section of the M62 shuts, with thousands of people heading to the region for the annual half marathon on Sunday (September 8).

In order for Network Rail to dismantle and remove Castleton Bridge in Greater Manchester, National Highways will shut a section of the M62 from 9pm Friday to 6am Monday.

The closure will affect cross-Pennine journeys with drivers heading to the region for the Great North Run are advised to seek alternative routes.

Tony Rich from AA said: “We would urge all drivers to plan ahead while this vital work is carried out to this incredibly busy section of motorway.

“Runners heading from the North West to the Great North Run are advised to familiarise themselves with the diversion route, in addition to their running route, to avoid heavy traffic scuppering a personal best.”
