A cyclist is tonight in hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car which failed to stop.

The male cyclist was riding on Meath Street in Middlesbrough at about 4.35pm on Wednesday (September 4) when he was hit by a car,

The vehicle then hit a house before fleeing the area, police said.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene and the 40-year-old cyclist was taken to James Cook University Hospital with a serious leg injury.

Enquiries are underway to identify the car and its driver.

Detective Chief Inspector John Bonner said: “We are already following numerous lines of enquiry including conducting house-to-house to speak to residents in the area and reviewing CCTV and dash cam footage.

“I am keen to hear from members of the public who were driving in the area at around the time the collision took place and have dash cam footage inside their vehicles. The same goes for residents who have not yet spoken to officers and may also have cars with dash cam footage.

“I would also encourage the driver of the vehicle to contact police.”

A force spokesperson added: “Anyone with information is asked to call Cleveland Police on 101 quoting 170824. Information can also be provided anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
