One of Middlesbrough’s busiest pubs has lodged plans to create a new outdoor seating area.

The Swatters Carr, in Linthorpe Road, operated by national pub chain Wetherspoons, hopes to add the extension to the side of the premises.

Plans submitted to Middlesbrough Council describe a pavement café/beer garden which would be introduced along the length of the property, which faces Victoria Road.

Moveable furniture and planters would be incorporated along with barriers.

The side elevation of the building would be altered with summer opening doors being introduced, replacing existing, small high-level windows.

The extension would add to the outdoor capacity of the popular boozer, which currently has a small seating area to the front, with the two elements being joined together.

But it would mean a reduction in car parking spaces on Victoria Road from eight to three.

The company stated it had been in correspondence with the council regarding plans for the pedestrianisation or part pedestrianisation of the street, which was previously closed to through traffic in a bid to improve safety and reduce accidents.

The plans propose the hours of opening would be from 8am to midnight, Monday to Friday and on Sundays/Bank Holidays.

The new area would be open later still on Saturdays, until 1am.

A proposal document included with the application drawn up by Manchester-based architects Harrison Ince said Victoria Road would be paved and existing large planters relocated to prevent vehicle access.

Meanwhile, a design and access statement compiled by the same firm said the road paving would be in a manner alike with the pedestrian route leading to the Teesside University campus to the rear of The Swatters Carr.

No timescale has been given for a decision over the plans, which were only lodged at the end of last month with a number of consultees also yet to issue formal responses.

A spokesman for the company said it would not be commenting at this stage.

The Swatters Carr takes its name from an isolated farmhouse that was once situated in the vicinity, being recorded on a map as early as 1618.

A pub known as the Swatters Carr Hotel was opened on the site in 1878 and recorded in the 1891 census.

The name later made a comeback after Wetherspoons secured the three-storey building and gave it its original pub moniker when opening in 2011.
