The Great North Run 2024 will be taking over Newcastle, Gateshead and South Shields this weekend.
It’s thought 60,000 people are expected to take part in the 13.1-mile half-marathon, with many hoping to raise as much money as possible for their chosen charity.
But if you need to head out and about around these areas in the North East on Saturday (September 7) and Sunday (September 8), there are some road closures you need to be aware of.
Below are the planned road closures for the Great North Run this year, according to NewcastleGateshead.
Great North Run 2024 road closures – September 7 and 8
A167 Central Motorway
- From 8pm on Saturday, September 7 until 6.30pm on Sunday, September 8 - A167 Central Motorway. Cowgate Roundabout/Grandstand Road Interchange to Great North Road (B1318 Interchange)
- From 8.45am until 5pm on Sunday - A167 Central Motorway, closed from Great North Road Interchange (B1318) to Park Lane (A184)
A184
- From 9am until 5pm on Sunday - A184 Park Lane/Felling Bypass to Whitemare Pool Interchange
A194 (M)
- From 9.45am until 4pm on Sunday - Whitemare Pool Interchange/Leam Lane to John Reid Road Roundabout (A1300)
John Reid Road (A1300)
- From 9.45am until 4pm on Sunday - John Reid Rd (A1300) to Prince Edward Road (A1300) to Redwell Lane/Coast Road (A183) roundabout
Coast Road (A183)
- From 8am until 5.30pm on Sunday - Coast Road (A183) closed from Redwell Lane to Mowbray Road
Bents Park Road
- From 2.45am on Sunday until 5.30pm - Bents Park Road. Closed from Sea Way to Mowbray Road
Coast Road (A183)
- From 2pm until 5.30pm on Sunday - Coast Road (A183) closed from Marsden Rock to Redwell Lane (Northbound only)

Additional 2024 road closures
- Leam Lane (A194) northeast bound carriageway - from White Mare Pool (A194(M)/A184) to John Reid Road (A1300) between 9.45am and 4pm.
- Prince Edward Road and Redwell Lane (A1300) - from King George Road (A1018) to Coast Road (A183) between 9.45am and 4pm.
- Mowbray Road (crossing between Iolanthe Terrace and Westoe Avenue) - closed from 9.45am until 4pm.
- Station Road (southbound) - closed for its entire length between 9.45am and 4pm.
- Howard Street (A185) - cllosed for its entire length between 9.45am and 4pm.
- Maxwell Street - closed from its junction with Western Approach eastwards for 40 meters between 9.45am and 4pm.
It’s important to note the above road closures outline the legal road closure times which have been permitted by the relevant authorities, explains NewcastleGateshead.
However, closure times when participants are using the roads will be managed by professional stewards to minimise disruption.
