A man remains in critical condition in hospital nine days on from an incident in Darlington that saw police block the road for over 20 hours.

Emergency services were called to Coniscliffe Road in the town at around 10.20pm on Monday, August 26, following concerns for a person's welfare. 

The incident saw the road closed in Darlington for around 20 hours - which saw police, paramedics, firefighters and air ambulance crews on the scene. 

During the incident, emergency services were seen talking to a man on the roof of the building on Coniscliffe Road.

At about 6pm on Tuesday, August 27, the man fell from the roof and was taken to hospital by paramedics.

Police confirmed at the time that the man was in a critical condition in hospital.

At the time, a spokesperson for Durham Police said: “Emergency services were called to Coniscliffe Road shortly after 10pm on Monday (August 26) following concerns for the welfare of a man, who was on the roof of a building.

“Road closures were put in place while officers, working with the fire and rescue service, tried for several hours to help the man down from the roof to safety.”

The force has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office of Police Conduct following the incident.

Durham Police confirmed on Tuesday (September 3) that the man remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Following the incident, the air ambulance landed in South Park in Darlington at around 6.40pm on Tuesday, August 27 - with the North East Ambulance Service confirming at the time that a person was taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough via road ambulance.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: "We received a call at 10.23pm on Monday to concerns to a person's wellbeing on Coniscliffe Road, Darlington.

"We dispatched multiple resources, including a duty officer, clinical team leader, our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), and double crewed ambulance and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance. 

"One person was taken to James Cook Hospital at 7.20pm last night (Tuesday) by road, with a doctor on board."

A Great North Air Ambulance spokesperson said: "Yesterday our critical care team was activated at 6.21pm to an incident on Coniscliffe Road in Darlington.

"We had a paramedic and doctor on board our aircraft and also a paramedic respond on a critical care car. They arrived on the scene at 6.30pm and worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) to assess and treat a patient.

"The patient was taken to hospital by the NEAS road crew, accompanied by our team."
