Plans to demolish an unused motorcycle showroom in Durham to make way for a shop and a set of apartments have been withdrawn.

The project proposed the demolition of the existing showroom, followed by the construction of a new two-storey building.

Comprising of commercial space on the ground floor and residential units above, the plans also included an additional two-storey residential building on the adjacent land.

The development would have resulted in a combined total of nine two-bedroom apartments and twelve parking spaces.

Potential issues such as flooding, sewage disposal, and the impact on biodiversity, including the possible presence of bats, were all included in the form.

The application from Mr Steve Best for the new development on the site of the former North East Motorcycles showroom faced objections from the Parish Council, the City of Durham Trust, and County Councillor Liz Brown.

The Parish Council voiced concerns about the potential effects of the project on the local Neighbourhood Plan.

Their objections were centred around issues of design, scale, and the effect on local character.

They voiced worries about the proposed buildings' height and the negative impact these might have on neighbouring properties.

Cllr Brown questioned the design, scale, impact on neighbours, and compatibility with surrounding residential areas, including the presence of sheltered housing for the elderly.

The letter from Cllr Brown suggested apartments should be restricted to people over 55 to better suit the needs of the community.

As a result of these many objections, the plans have been withdrawn, with no indications of possible revisions being stated at the present time.
