The reopening of one of the region’s busiest Wetherspoons after a £5m refurb has been delayed by three weeks.

The Mile Castle in Newcastle, the city’s main Spoons and one of its biggest watering holes closed in June for a major upgrade set to take ten weeks.

That meant the pub was due to reopen next week on Tuesday, September 3, but the pub giant confirmed it will now open three weeks later, on September 24.

The venue, which opened in December 2009, has been undergoing a full internal revamp including decoration, carpets, upgraded lighting, extending the bar on the third floor and creating a new cellar.

It has also seen the creation of a 26-bed hotel and 3,000sq ft beer garden.

It is understood works on the new hotel, which is being built in an adjoining building, formerly the home of law firm Samuel Phillips, are on track with and it will open in November.

Wetherspoon founder and chairman Tim Martin said previously: “ The investment highlights our commitment to the pub, its customers and staff, as well as the city of Newcastle.

“The Mile Castle is an extremely popular pub and we are confident that our customers will welcome the work being undertaken in the pub as well as the creation of our first hotel in the city.”
