A man is in a critical condition after falling from the roof of a building in Darlington.

Police spent almost 20 hours on Coniscliffe Road in Darlington from 10pm on Monday (August 26) after receiving reports of concern for a man’s welfare.

The man had been seen on the roof of the building and the road was closed while officers, along with he fire service, tried to help him to safety.

At about 6pm on Tuesday (August 27) the man fell from the roof and was taken to hospital by paramedics.

Police have confirmed the man is in a critical condition in hospital.

A spokesperson for Durham Police said: “Emergency services were called to Coniscliffe Road shortly after 10pm on Monday (August 26) following concerns for the welfare of a man, who was on the roof of a building.

“Road closures were put in place while officers, working with the fire and rescue service, tried for several hours to help the man down from the roof to safety.”

The force has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office of Police Conduct following the incident.

An ambulance service spokesperson added: “We received a call at 10.23pm on Monday to concerns to a person's wellbeing on Coniscliffe Road, Darlington.

“We dispatched multiple resources, including a duty officer, clinical team leader, our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), and double crewed ambulance and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance.

“One person was taken to James Cook Hospital at 7.20pm last night (Tuesday) by road, with a doctor on board.”
