Darlington’s Market Square was buzzing with excitement today (Wednesday, August 28) as a host of free, cycling-themed fun and games took over Market Square.
From 9am to 3pm, people joined in the activities, ahead of the Tour of Britain which kicks off in Darlington next week on Wednesday, September 4.
The event delivered a day full of interactive activities for all ages. Some bike-themed games were available including Bubble Frog - a bike that produced bubbles out of the frog on the front - a velodrome racing game - and a pedal-powered Scalextric track where two people could battle it out as if they were in the Olympics, which brought out the competitive spirit in some participants.
For those looking to mix fun with fitness, the bike-powered smoothie maker offered a tasty reward for a bit of pedalling with Echo reporter Olivia Howlett among those trying it out.
The Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain is one of the UK’s premier cycling events, attracting top cyclists from around the world. Darlington’s role as the starting point for the race highlights the town’s commitment to promoting cycling and active living, the council says.
Jess, one of the event workers, said: “Grab your old bike and give it a try. Cycling has so many health benefits, such as, on average, a cyclist has the health of someone ten years younger. Plus, it’s fun, it’s free, and it’s sustainable.
