A wine bar in Durham City enjoyed a successful Bank Holiday opening weekend, as hundreds of people flocked to the venue to enjoy a drink.

Crush Wine Bar, based on North Road, officially opened to members of the public on Sunday (August 25), with the venue being pictured full of customers within 30 minutes of opening.

Despite enjoying a soft-launch-style opening last week, the main event on Sunday saw Crush welcome people from 5pm, and at about 5.30pm, all of the tables and standing space had filled up.

Owner of the new wine bar, Daniel Jonberger has said that seeing that many people at the wine bar within the first day was a "humbling experience".

Mr Jonberger, who has worked in the wine business for 28 years, through his time at Rockliffe Hall in Darlington and the two Michelin-starred restaurant the Raby Hunt, made the decision to open his own place after conversations with other top names in the world of food and drink in Durham.

The sommelier is a 50 per cent owner of Crush Wine Bar, with Craig Lappin-Smith, who owns Coarse restaurant in Durham City, having the other 50 per cent share.

As part of its offering, Crush will have a 'wall of wines' for customers to choose from, with wines available by the bottle or by the glass.

Moving forward, the owner of Crush wants to invite winemakers into the venue for a ticketed event, as well as inviting top chefs to a pop-up food and wine evening.
