Plans have been submitted to demolish one of the region's most famous waterparks just weeks after it was sold to an unnamed developer.

The abandoned water park Wet 'n' Wild on Rotary Way in North Shields could soon be turned to rubble should demolition plans get the green light from North Tyneside Council.

Once known as the UK's largest indoor waterpark after it opened in 1993, financial difficulties meant it was sold to Serco in 2014.

Serco Leisure took over in 2014 and invested in the venue, refurbishing the reception, café and the children’s Discovery Play Island, as well as the ageing boiler system and the pool plant area before it went in to administration in 2020.

Rides included the Abyss, the Black Hole, Tornado and Kamikaze, and there was also a Lazy River, wave machine and a mini water park as well as soft play.

The park has since been left abandoned until it was sold to an unnamed developer in June of this year, igniting hopes that it could be returned to its former glory.

However, plans submitted by Bloom Developments LTD in late July detail plans to demolish the "building formerly known as Wet 'n' Wild including external slides."

The reasoning given for the demolition is due to reported break ins.

The application details: "Property has recurrent breaking and entering with increasing anti-social behaviour. Demolition will enable future development."

If approved, developers say work would commence immediately and last around eight weeks.
